ILSAC GF-5 engine oil specification was introduced for 2011 vehicles and older. These oils provide improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbos, stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

ILSAC GF‑5 is an engine oil specification developed by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) for petrol engines. It replaced the older GF‑4 standard and added a series of improvements to meet the demands of contemporary engines.
Though GF-5 was made obsolete in 2021, oils meeting this specification remain fully effective for engines designed to use them. GF‑5 oils are also backwards-compatible with GF‑4, meaning they can safely be used in vehicles that originally required GF‑4 oils. For modern vehicles, the GF‑6A standard is recommended, offering enhanced fuel efficiency, improved wear protection, and better low-temperature performance.
